Spot the Safety Hazards

This assignment is a continuation of the Health and Safety awareness.  This assignment will assist you by getting you to think about workplace hazards.

A hazard is anything that can hurt you or make you ill.  You face hazards every day – but you are trained to look for them.  Cars, busses and trucks along a road, a wet kitchen floor, a frayed electrical plug or a broken glass in the dishwasher.

A normal teenager is not trained to look for dangers in a place they have never been before.  Unless you are told or “trained to look for” certain things it could cost you your life.  You need to know about harmful chemicals, falling equipment from above, loud noises, heavy machinery or other dangerous things that are in the workplace.

Hazards come in many forms:

Physical Hazards – electrical, loud noises, hot/cold things, spills, trips or working from heights

Biological Hazards – comes from working with animals, humans or plants, blood, fungus, insect bites, animal droppings

Ergonomic Hazards – occurs when the type of work, body position and working conditions put a strain on your body. Things such as poor lighting, improper lifting, poor posture and repeating the same motions over and over

Chemical Hazards – being exposed to chemicals such as cleaning products, vapours and fumes, gases and solvents.

WHMIS or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System was designed to inform you of what chemicals and hazards are present in the workplace.
